"Silverado

Chevrolet has finally revealed the EPA fuel economy figures for the 2020 Silverado 1500 equipped with the Duramax 3.0L diesel engine (mated to a 10-speed automatic transmission), and they are very impressive. Rear-wheel drive models are rated at up to 33 MPG highway and 23 MPG city; four-wheel drive models come in at 29 highway and 23 city.

These numbers easily beat the Ford F-150 diesel’s EPA ratings, which are 22 city/30 highway for two-wheel drive models–the four-wheel drive Fords are rated at 21 city/28 highway. GM also manages to beat most of the midsize trucks’ most efficient engine offerings, including their own Colorado and Canyon, which get up to 30 MPG highway with their 2.8L diesel engines.

Ram is the wildcard here, as there’s still mystery surrounding the 2020 Ram 1500 EcoDiesel’s fuel efficiency. The same 3.0L EcoDiesel engine offered in the Ram 1500 will also be offered in the Jeep Gladiator and Wrangler. Will this prompt GM to respond by dropping the 3.0L Duramax engine into the Colorado and Canyon? We’re guessing yes, and the fuel economy numbers in those trucks will likely be even more impressive than those of the Silverado.

With the recent influx of efficient diesel engines into the half-ton pickup truck market, increased competition for high towing figures, and major leaps in technology and comfort, and the pickup truck wars show no signs of slowing.
