Last October Mopar Insiders broke the news that a Dodge Challenger ACR is in the works. FCA has not used the ACR nameplate since the 2017 Dodge Viper but could be looking to bring it back for the 2020 (or 2021) Dodge Challenger. In 2017, FCA unveiled the 2018 Dodge Demon and in 2014 they unveiled the 2015 Dodge Challenger Hellcat. If you follow the pattern, then expect a special edition Challenger to debut sometime this year. However, can we still expect the highly anticipated Challenger?

GT500 may have some competition

The country has been turned upside down since a national emergency was declared with the unemployment rate hitting 14.7% and the market tanking. Many auto manufacturers fear that a recession is likely to occur. This could potentially change some plans for not only FCA but other manufacturers as well.

However, we still think the project is likely on, and here is why. The ACR Challenger will feature carbon fiber components such as a carbon-fiber wing. Expect other expensive components such as dive planes, a V8 engine (likely a Hellcat), and stickier tires. The price tag on this car will be high which leads us to believe that those who are minimally affected by the economic downturn will still buy this kind of vehicle. For example, the 2009 Corvette ZR1 was still released (though delayed) despite the economic situation back a little over 10 years ago. The ZR1 sold very well in its first year despite dealer markups.

We do not know when Dodge will make an announcement on the ACR Challenger. We do know that it is likely to be sometime this year though the release of the car may be delayed (just like other FCA products) to a later date.

As of this week, we can confirm that according to a Dodge spokesperson, the ACR Challenger will not come to light.
