Lucid Motors’ first car, the Lucid Air, will appear in April at the New York Auto Show. The Silicon Valley automaker developed its own powertrain technologies, and reportedly has the world’s most efficient electric engine: the range is predicted to be 400 miles (easily beating any Tesla), without extra-large battery packs.

The company claims its battery pack will have just 110 kilowatt-hours (kWh), which would require a 3.6 mile/kWh efficiency; Tesla’s Model Y is claimed to get 4.1 mi/kWh. However, Lucid is reportedly actually closer to 5 mi/kWh.

Though most people only want pickups and crossovers, Lucid is planning to sell a sporty car first; it will be made in Arizona, and the goal is to have cars in private hands by the end of the year. While a pickup may seem like the ideal electric car for numerous reasons, including segment popularity, pickups’ high average sales price, and opportunities for greater efficiency, the electric-pickup market will be very crowded in two years. Rivian is making its own pickups and is behind Ford-branded versions, Bollinger is hitting the high end, Ram is reportedly prepping a joint venture, Tesla has shown a concept, Atlis has an XT Pickup shown (starting at $45,000), Workhorse is planning the W-15, and Havelaar (Canada) has the well-named Bison.

For those keeping track at home, there are an insane number of electric pickups on the way, though the lowest starting price is $45,000.

Hyperion Motors will also show their first car in New York this year. The auto show runs from April 10 to April 19 for the public, with press days on April 8 and 9.
