Chrysler’s rumored straight-six goes dark
Rumors have stopped circulating about Chrysler’s straight-six turbo engine, based on the 2-liter turbo four in the Jeep Wrangler.
The engine, to be made in the company’s Saltillo, Mexico plant which currently makes V6 powerplants, was to be used in pickup trucks and possibly Jeeps, according to rumor site Allpar—which referred to it as the Tornado and GME-T6 in a 2018 report. The site later said its power would top the 5.7 liter V8, which was, for a time, rumored to be ending production. Mopar Insiders claimed a 525 horsepower rating, which seems higher than is likely even for a high-performance version; the 6.4 liter SRT engine only makes 485 horsepower, and the straight-six is to be a 3-liter.
While this engine has never been officially confirmed, several insiders said it would be coming out, and Mopar Insiders spotted what they thought was the GME-T6 on an EGR system patent application. There seems to be no activity at the moment, though, and the rumor mill is cold.
Has the engine been postponed until Stellantis is done? Have last-minute problems cropped up? Let us know if you know!
