Tesla “Plaid Powertrain” Is ready to dominate tracks

In a nod to Spaceballs, Tesla has been recently testing a new powertrain for its Model S. The new powertrain utilizes a three-motor system which means that this powertrain will accelerate the car faster than “Ludicrous” mode. Yes, that’s right, the masterminds at Tesla plan to release something crazier than the already crazy Ludicrous mode. Musk confirmed this and in a series of tweets, we know a few things.
The Plaid powertrain is about a year away from production assuming everything runs smooth. We also know that this powertrain will be available in almost every Tesla including the Roadster, which has not been released to the public just yet. Only the Model 3 and Y will not be getting this new option. Musk also said that the new design will “cost more than our current offerings, but less than competitors.”
Tesla fans (and automotive fans) should be excited out about the new Plaid models. With it, we can expect upgrades to the chassis, upgrades to the cooling system, along with potential record-breaking performance numbers. A Tesla Model S with this new powertrain already broke the sedan record at Laguna Seca with a time of 1:36.555. We can also expect Tesla to make an appearance at the Nurburgring to potentially try and set a new EV record.
